CINEPLEX A HOSTEL ENVIRONMENT

And not just 'cause if you ask some bozo to keep it down, he'll tell ya to do stuff to yourself that you always thought you needed a partner for, either. Hostel — a sort of National Lampoon's European Vacation for masochists — debuted in first place at the box office with $20.1 million. (But if people are really so into torture, why didn't Elektra do better? Riddle me that.) Dropping into second and third, respectively, were The Chronicles of a Movie Whose Title Is So Long, It Could Be Considered a Chronicle in and of Itself (with $15.4 million) and King Kong (with $12.5 million). Nowhere near the top of the heap was the Adam Sandler-produced turkey Grandma's Boy, which took in a measly $2.9 million and, we hope, made Chris Kattan feel at least a little better about Corky Romano. read more

BIG DADDIES

Aussie news services are reporting that Russell Crowe and his wife, Danielle Spencer, are expecting their second child; word is, the baby registry is at the AT&T store. Also, funnyman Adam Sandler and his wife, Jackie, will welcome their first child in the spring, People reports. Upon birth, the Sandler newborn will speak just like about half of daddy's film alter egos. read more

POSTHUMOUS HONOR

Late Saturday Night Liver Chris Farley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Friday, nearly eight years after the comedian died of an accidental overdose of morphine and cocaine at age 33. SNL alums David Spade, Chris Rock and Adam Sandler were on hand to pay tribute to Farley. Everyone else was stuck on the 405. read more

[Editor's Note: The Teen Choice...

[Editor's Note: The Teen Choice Awards were rebroadcast on Wednesday night on the TV Guide Channel.] I have to say right away, our TV Guide Channel kicked butt on the official red carpet two-hour preshow, and I'd state this even if I didn't work here. Kimberly Caldwell, Rosanna Tavarez and Chris Booker were awesome hosts and set the proper tone for Fox's awards show. Speaking of which…8:00 pm Gwen Stefani opens the show with her No. 1 hit "Hollaback Girl." Can I stress how much I love the original, unedited version and how much I detest the edited version? I know it's network TV, but why perform the song if it has to be edited? Sing "Rich Girl" or something else. All those "shhh" sounds go right through me. OK — got that off my chest.8:06 I said this about the MTV Movie Awards and I'll say it here. How does Andy Dick continue to get booked on these awards each year? So. Not. Funny.8:12 Jim Car read more

Deuce's Wilder Than Ever for Schneider

Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo

The return of the "hard R" big-screen comedy continues this weekend when Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo hits theaters on Friday. While there is bound to be some "reaction" to the sequel's outrageous sexual euphemisms and unspeakable sight gags, you can thank such bawdy box-office entries as Wedding Crashers and Bad News Bears for softening the blow a bit. "I'm glad that Wedding Crashers did well because all the comedies I loved when I was a kid were [rated] R," Deuce star Rob Schneider tells TVGuide.com. "I had Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder, Mel Brooks, Monty Python... [starring in] all these funny movies. So I feel like our children — um, I mean the 13-  t read more

Sean Astin: From Hobbit to He-Man

A funny thing happened after Sean Astin wrapped his grueling two-year Lord of the Rings tour of duty: He lightened up — mentally and physically — for his role in the Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore's comedy 50 First Dates (due out in February). "I lost a lot of weight and am in much better shape," he tells TV Guide Online of his Dates gig, which has him playing Barrymore's gym-rat brother. "[My character's] doing splits all the time and push-ups and jumping jacks and lifting things. He's supposed to be this incredibly muscle-bound guy, but I'm not really that muscle-bound, so it is a joke on that level, too." After spending so much time wearing dusty cloaks and donning hairy foot prosthetics for Rings, read more
