Weekend TV: Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, Bletchley Return

And so the unnecessarily long goodbye begins for AMC's breakout, breakthrough signature series Mad Men, its final 14 hours being unconscionably broken into two halves over two years, starting Sunday at 10/9c. (Yes, it worked for Breaking Bad, but this isn't that kind of show.) While prolonging the inevitable, and potentially blunting whatever narrative momentum still exists in a most inelegant and desperate-seeming way, it's no wonder the often dazzling opening episode — titled "Time Zones," in a nod to the firm's now-bicoastal focus — is so preoccupied with time.

Ask Matt: Dramedies, Arrested, Nurse Jackie, H50, Hannibal

Question: Why don't the broadcast networks produce comedy-dramas anymore? It was not more than 10 years ago when the networks were full of successful long-running dramedies like Ally McBeal, The West Wing and Gilmore Girls. But now all those dramedy show-runners have moved over to the cable networks: David E. Kelley has just produced Monday Mornings for TNT, Aaron Sorkin is with The Newsroom on HBO, and Amy Sherman-Palladino had (the great) Bunheads on ABC Family. And lots of successful ...

Ask Matt: Thrones Unspoiled, Nurse Jackie, Mad Men, Orphan Black

Question: So I was watching two shows I really like this week coming to the end of their seasons. The first, Orphan Black, is not so well known, though I expect that is in the process of changing. The other, Game of Thrones, is very well known and discussed. I realized as I watched these shows, how little the first one has any type of spoilers and with the second, as well read and known as it is, that I hadn't had it spoiled for me prior to this episode. I have watched many shows both with and without knowing spoilers, and after watching ...

The Biz: History Feels the Need for Speed

Since the late 1990s, British imports such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Dancing With the Stars and American Idol have become ratings blockbusters in the United States. But stateside success has eluded one of the biggest Brit hits of them all.

It's Top Gear, the rollicking reality/talk-show hybrid from the BBC that features three British automotive journalists gabbing about cars and performing elaborate and occasionally breathtaking stunts and challenges. The series, which has been shown here on BBC America, has been a worldwide sensation for almost 10 years and was recently the subject of a 60 Minutes profile. The studio ...

Rescue Me Actors Share Their Top Moments

The sixth season of Rescue Me will premiere tonight at 10/9c on FX, but the cast has already wrapped filming on this season and next, which will be the last. So no wonder actors John Scurti (Lou) and Adam Ferrara (Needles) are feeling nostalgic.

Scurti compares the chemistry between himself and executive producer/star Denis Leary (Tommy) to some great comedic teams. "I don't know if it's the ghosts of Laurel and Hardy or Ralph and Ed, or Fred and Barney," Scurti tells TV Guide Magazine. "It just kind of works."

It's fitting, then, that Scurti's favorite moment from the show is a scene between he and Leary from an earlier season.... read more
