Ricky Gervais Goes On the Offensive

Ricky Gervais

Get ready for the sickest joke ever told. But before Ricky Gervais hits you with it near the end of his HBO special Ricky Gervais: Out of England 2 — The Stand-up Special (Saturday, 10/9c, HBO), the badass Brit takes on gay animals, famine in Africa, fat people on planes and, of course, the Bible. Nothing's sacred!

TV Guide Magazine: You push envelopes we didn't know existed, yet insist you're never offensive and will never apologize for a joke. What's up with that?
Gervais: I'm not a comic who thinks comedy is your conscience taking a day off. Mine never takes a day off. So I don't ... read more

Dayzee's Christmas Surprise on The Bold and the Beautiful

Susan Flannery

The folks at The Bold and the Beautiful have done an admirable — and Emmy worthy — job drawing attention to the homeless. And they're sticking to it. On December 22, cancer victim Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery) will purchase the show's hipster hangout Insomnia Café and then, on Christmas Day, she'll hand the keys over to Dayzee (Kristolyn Lloyd), the Skid Row youth she befriended several weeks ago. The place will be renamed Dayzee's. What's more, two real-life residents of L.A.'s Union Rescue Mission shelter, Anthony Ortega and Leilani Zachary, have joined ... read more

Echo is being punk'd by that wicked little elf Dorian Lord, played by ... read more

The Best in Soaps 2010

Don Diamont and Heather Tom

Best Soap: The Bold and the Beautiful

How can one show be both gloriously uplifting and dirty as hell? That's the marvel of B&B! After back-to-back Emmy wins as best soap, this CBS serial should make it three in a row thanks to its daring lung-cancer plot involving big mama Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery) who nearly chose death over life. Episodes with Stephanie visiting the homeless on L.A.'s Skid Row, and giving them a chance to tell their life stories, made for important and transcendent TV. read more

Holiday Hart-Break for All My Children's Kendall

Alicia Minshew

Nobody needs a Christmas miracle more than All My Children's Kendall Hart (Alicia Minshew). She's about to receive one — but it's not the one she's hoping for. On the soap's December 27 episode, the Pine Valley heroine, still in deep mourning over the plane-crash death of her husband Zach (Thorsten Kaye), has a visit from Father Clarence, the magical, mystical priest who always appears on the show at holiday time to help those in need. (The terrific Malachy McCourt who played the role for many years had to bow out this time. He's replaced by Michael McCarthy).

Exclusive: Scoop on the Next General Hospital Tragedy

General Hospital

Not again! The trouble-plagued city of Port Charles has seen many epic disasters in recent years — a killer virus, a towering inferno, colliding passenger trains — and now it's time to put the kiddies in some holiday jeopardy. ABC's General Hospital will kick off the new year by sending its young ones — ranging in age from tots to teenagers — on a Christmas vacation bus trip to snow country. That bus is forced to take an unplanned route due to weather trouble and will skid on black ice and flip over during the December 29 cliffhanger. When the show returns January 3, the bus will plummet down a steep ravine, thanks to some cool CGI tricks.

"Every once in a while we like to put the opera back in soap opera," says exec producer Jill Farren Phelps. "It's a dangerous and terrifying incident and the emotional ramifications will roll out for some time to come because this affects every family in town." Kids involved include... read more

Exclusive First Look: All My Children's New Opening Credits

All My Children

ABC's flagship soap All My Children hasn't had a new opening credits sequence in ages — in fact, not since Julie Hanan Carruthers took over as executive producer in the 2002-03 season. But a brand new opener is set to debut Wednesday, December 22. Gone are the archival scrapbook photos seen in the current credits, as well as images of David Canary (Adam) and Ray MacDonnell (Joe), who have retired from the show, and James Mitchell (Palmer), who died early this year. That's not all that's missing: Carruthers decided to drop those stagey glamour shots of the AMC stars and replaced them with actual AMC clips for a fresher, more natural look. "The thought was to be more true to the characters and make their environments and lifestyles more specific in order to give the audience a window into Pine Valley," says Carruthers. TV Guide Magazine brings you this exclusive first look, after the jump... read more

A Bittersweet Days of Our Lives Christmas for Melissa Reeves

Melissa Reeves

Get out those hankies. One of the most beloved traditions in soaps, the decorating of the Horton Christmas tree on Days of Our Lives, will be a lot less cheerful this year due to the death of two major family members. Mickey, last played by Kevin Dobson, was killed off by the writers in January. Then grande dame Alice passed away in June, several months after the death of actress Frances Reid, who portrayed the feisty matriarch since Days debuted in 1965. But Salem's premiere clan is determined to press on and make the best of the holidays. TV Guide Magazine got the scoop from Melissa Reeves, who recently returned to Days after a four-year absence as Alice's granddaughter Jennifer Rose.

Big Brother's Rachel Reilly Talks Scandal and Soaps

Rachel Reilly

She's not just living a soap opera these days, she's also appearing on one. Big Brother 12 vixen Rachel Reilly just shot her fourth episode of The Bold and the Beautiful — airing January 24 — and it's proving to be a much-needed distraction from real-life events. Reilly recently became the innocent third party in a sex-Skyping scandal in which her man, Brendon Villegas, whom she met and fell in love with on Big Brother, sent photos of his naked genitals to a woman he met online. (In an apology video, Villegas claims he was being blackmailed).
