Pinocchio — Blu-ray Review

Pinocchio (2-Disc 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition + Standard DVD) [Blu-ray]

A few years ago I had a discussion with someone who told me "old movies can't be released on Blu-ray because they weren't shot with HD cameras." He was clearly wrong, since 35mm film is a higher resolution than HD to start with, and Disney proves it by releasing Pinocchio, their second animated feature, on Blu-ray 70 years after the movie was made. read more

Simon & Simon - Season 2

The Simon brothers are back on DVD after a two-and-a-half year absence. Season 2, the first full season for the show, has the brothers investigating missing dolphins, a stolen Ki', and even teaming up with Thomas Magnum. That's right, the cross-over episode, "Ki' I's Don't Lie" from Magnum P.I. is included on this set, along with all 22 episodes from Simon & Simon season 2, including the double-length episode, "Pirate's Key." The set is released by Shout! Factory, who picked up the distribution rights from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. This isn't the first title Shout! Factory has continued after the initial distributor decided to hold back releasing other seasons. Do you have any favorites you'd like to see Shout! pick up?

Prince Caspian — Blu-ray Review

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

I have a distinct memory of the local librarian leading me over to a wall of books where she pulled The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe from a shelf and handed it to me, saying "Gordon, you'll love this series of books." She was right; I read all the books in The Chronicles of Narnia series over the following months, and the series remains a childhood favorite. I loved the first movie when it came out a couple of years ago, and I was eager to watch Prince Caspian on Blu-ray, since I missed it in the theater. The movie joins Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmond Pevensie as they return to the land of Narnia only to find it's not quite the place they left behind. The Telmarines have taken over the land, nearly causing the extinction of the Narnians, and now their nation is in a state of upheaval as the heir to the throne, Prince Caspian, has been chased from his throne by his Uncle. The Pevensie siblings battle with the Prince to restore him to the throne, and bring peace back to the land of Narnia. read more

WALL-E — Blu-ray Review

Wall-E

For hundreds of years WALL-E has compacted trash into nice stackable cubes, but one day he receives a visitor, EVE, a beautiful, sleek search robot. Her arrival leads WALL-E on a trip that's out of this world. This is the ninth smash hit for Pixar, and now it's available on DVD and Blu-ray.

I've loved the Pixar movies ever since I caught Luxo Jr and Knick Knack playing in theaters back when I was a 'tween (though we weren't called that yet). The stories are always phenomenal, and the characters are brought to life through the animation. Pixar has always been able to bring such personality and emotion to inanimate objects, whether it's a lamp, or a robot. WALL-E is an excellent example of the emotion Pixar breathes into their characters.
