The Biggest Loser's David: Today I Am a Triathlete!

David Brown

I had heard it said, "If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you."  Fourteen weeks on The Biggest Loser ranch and I have been challenged in a million ways, big and small.  I've gone as far as a person can go on the show.  I've risen to the demands of each day, each workout, each setback, each growing challenge and I have succeeded.  I have learned about true success, being nothing more and nothing less than a few simple disciplines practiced daily.  And CHALLENGES are the gateway to the next level of growth, a launching pad for our potential, and a decision to define our own destiny.

The Biggest Loser's David on His Transformational Makeover

David Brown, Ken Paves

I remember watching The Biggest Loser makeover week episodes of seasons past with a pint of ice cream or bag of chips in my lap.  I would be inspired in the moment, genuinely happy for the contestants and their transformations, but knowing deep down that would never be me.  I couldn't visualize myself being able to do any of the things the people on this show routinely do; workouts, challenges and the incredible consistency of eating right and exercising daily.  I couldn't picture myself disciplined enough, consistent enough, worthy enough.... and when hope fades, "blindness" sets in.

The Biggest Loser's David on Going for the Gold

David Brown

There is a story of a determined woodcutter asking for a job with a timber merchant.  He wanted to show his new boss how strong a worker he was, so with new axe in hand, he brought back 18 trees the first day.  The boss congratulated him on the accomplishment.  Very motivated, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he brought only 15 trees back.  The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring 10 trees.  Day after day he was bringing less and less trees to his boss.  He went to the boss to apologize for his lack of production, to which the boss asked him, "When was the last time you sharpened your axe?"  The woodcutter replied, "Sharpen?  I had no time to sharpen my axe.  I have been very busy trying to cut trees..."

Biggest Loser's David: The Greatest Gift I've Received Is Learning to Love Myself Again

Carl Edwards, David Brown

"Better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved before."  Alfred Lord Tennyson

It was "Moving Forward" week, and the remaining contestants got a surprise visit by Biggest Loser alumni Abby.  Listening to her talk about her experience, I connected immediately to her heartbreaking story of loss.  She reminded us if she had not dealt with the hurt she had then she would not be where she is today.  I know exactly what she's talking about.  I too had an abundance of pain in my life I hadn't dealt with when I got here, and I can say the physical transformation I am enjoying is a direct result of finally dealing with those feelings of loss in my life.

The Biggest Loser's David: "It's Always the Finish That Defines You"

"Full effort is full victory." Mahatma Gandhi

Being a super-fan of The Biggest Loser for years, I knew what an accomplishment it was to make it to "Singles."  At the Week 10 challenge, Alison unveiled an assortment of colored jerseys, marking the end of team efforts, and introducing us to our new identities and start of individual efforts.  It was time to take everything we had learned over the first few months on the ranch and apply it solely for our own benefit.  Going forward, I had only my effort to count on.... and I really liked that new kind of positive pressure.

The Biggest Loser's David: Will I Be Successful Outside the Confines of the Ranch?

The Biggest Loser

You've probably heard the story "The Power of the Penny"... Take one penny and double it each day for just one month.  At the end of the first week, you'd have a paltry $0.64, but keep going and by the end of the second week you'd have $81.92. Not bad.  At Day 21 or the end of the third week, you'd see a $10,485.76 return. And by the time you hit Day 31, the last calendar day of the month, that day one penny is now worth more than $10.737 million.  So what's the point?

Biggest Loser's David: Perseverance Was My Word of the Week

The holidays are a special time of year filled with joy, singing, celebrating faith, and sharing time with loved ones... but it can also be a very hard time of the year emotionally for many.  On average, people will gain somewhere in the neighborhood of seven pounds during the season from Thanksgiving through the New Year.  I was one of those people on the high side of that average, and although I have no scientific study to back me up, I think it probably had a lot to do with me being emotionally obese.

The Biggest Loser's David Brown on His New Thanksgiving Traditions

Daveid Brown, Ruben Studdard

Traditions are an important part of my life.  I remember growing up how fun it was to get the whole extended family together for Thanksgiving dinner, to hear the stories from my grandparents, to watch football with the men, to play games outside with the cousins, and of course eat at least a bite from every single dish the women of our family made.  Today, we still get together with every side of the family to do most all those same things, but we've since added 2two newer traditions.

The first new tradition is we share meals with those less fortunate in our community because serving is an important family value. The second new tradition we adopted was after my first wife Andrea passed away, and we started releasing balloons with notes tied to them as a tribute to her.  Both new traditions serve as important reminders to our family as to what is truly important in life and how blessed we are, which I guess is what Thanksgiving is really all about... and even being thousands of miles away from my family this week, I was able to live out those two new traditions in unique ways.

Biggest Loser's David: I Have a New and Revitalized Belief in Myself

Everyone deserves a second chance - everyone.  Walking back into the house to kick off Week 6, Ruben was waiting on us with his big, warm, signature smile.  The Red Team felt whole again, and knew this was the start of what was going to be a really good week - we hoped anyway!  I don't know if you had been as tired as we were of the Blue Team winning everything in sight, but the Red Team just believed this week's challenge was going to be different. read more

The Biggest Loser's David: Perspective Is Everything

The Biggest Loser

Success at anything will always come down to attitude and effort, and we choose both.  Losing the weigh-in and, in turn, Ruben last week, left the Red Team licking our wounds heading into Week 5 on The Biggest Loser ranch.  When life doesn't go according to plan, it's so easy for me to get in the self-preservation mode.  In that space I am all too familiar with, I take short-cuts and lean toward my comfort zone, take the path of least resistance, feel sorry for myself and quit competing to win the day at hand.  Dolvett knew our team needed something to re-focus us, and the ladies from the Beat Cancer Boot Camp were the perfect inspiration we needed... that I needed.
