Roush on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Question: Having just finished devouring the nine episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I am very pleased. However, I can't help but wonder what might have been. I'm not an avid fan of 24, but from my perceptions of the show, these two would have been soulmates this midseason if aired together as originally planned. I don't know how many viewers Chronicles needs each week to ensure a long life, but there must be Jack Bauer fans who have thus far ignored Terminator that would love this show, right? Again, from what I understand of 24, the appeal lies largely in its tight pacing, tense storylines and the strong lead character. In my biased opinion, every episode of Chronicles feels as tight and tense as can be. Plus, I'd imagine there's a good chance that 24 fans who don't see enough Jack Bauer in Sarah Connor may very well find what they are looking for in Brian Austin Green's character. My only fear now is that if Fox does renew the series (fingers crossed!), an otherwise logical Fall 2009 relaunch might be too soon, since 24 returns in January — perhaps too late to give Sarah Connor the boost she needs to stay on the air long enough to stop Skynet and prevent Judgement Day. Am I getting too far ahead of myself? — Brendan B.
Matt Roush: The buzz is good that Terminator will be back for a second season, and I agree that Fox would be smart to hold it back and launch it alongside the long-delayed new season of 24 to give us maximum bang for the buck next January. The other option is to launch it in the fall alongside the new season of Prison Break, sustaining the action franchise concept. I’m nowhere near as keen on Prison Break as I am on 24, but Terminator will be a good fit with either. But your points are well taken that Sarah Connor and Jack Bauer would be quite a formidable team of action heroes on a single night. Hope we get to see it happen.
