Roush on Miley Cyrus
Question: When is the media going to stop shoving Miley Cyrus down everyone's throat? She's had appearances and presenting gigs on awards shows (the Oscars, for crying out loud) and is on the cover of tons of magazines. When has she ever attracted audiences over 30 years old? I personally am sick of seeing the no-talent teenager everywhere I look and on every channel I surf. — Margaret P.
Matt Roush: Were you ever a tween? Did you ever have a pop fave at the time who was the media flavor of the moment? To get upset about the current Miley Cyrus vogue, or (in the same vein) the hubbub over anything to do or anyone in High School Musical, is just silly. She may not speak to you, but I can tell you my tween-age goddaughter is over the moon about her and most things Disney Channel. And I find it charming. It's not that much different than how I probably was about The Brady Bunch, The Monkees, Adam West's Batman and all things Dark Shadows when I was the same age. Relax. At least this girl hasn't gone into the abyss yet, and if we're lucky, she'll avoid the sorts of traps that makes anyone a favorite of TMZ.
