Kris Allen, Adam Lambert
Kris Allen may have won American Idol, but judging by the new Billboard Hot 100, both he and runner-up Adam Lambert are winners.
Idol's Top 2 account for nine debuts on the chart this week, with Allen's coronation song, "No Boundaries," climbing the highest to No. 11. Allen's take on Kanye West's "Heartless" (No. 16) and Lambert's cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" (No. 19) both cracked the Top 20.
Lambert's "Mad World" put that song on the Hot 100 for the first time ever. Additionally, his version of Sam Cooke's classic "A Change Is Gonna Come" (No. 56) is the highest-charted cover of the song in history. (Cooke's original peaked at No. 31 in 1964.)
Other Allen singles making their debut are "Ain't No Sunshine" (No. 37), "Apologize" (No. 66) and "Falling Slowly" (No. 94). Lambert also charted with his version of "No Boundaries" (No. 72) and his U2 cover, "One" (No. 82).
The boys are also making waves on other Billboard charts. The collections of their assorted Season 8 performances — offered exclusively on iTunes — both debuted on the Billboard 200 album chart.
When you throw in previous Idol champs David Cook, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood as well as former contestants Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler, American Idol alum have 18 songs on the Hot 100.
