New TV on DVD for the week of September 25, 2007
The likable Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) returns for a second season of making himself right with karma by remedying his former goofs and injuries, checking them off one at a time on the list he wrote up after winning the lottery (and subsequently being hit by a car). With the help of his slow-but-sweet brother, Randy (Ethan Suplee), Earl continues to try to do right by his ex, Joy (the Emmy-winning Jaime Pressly), and her new family, including Crabman (Eddie Steeples), especially when Joy gets nabbed for stealing a truck from a local store that refused to accept a return without a receipt. This lighthearted comedy trotted out a formidable list of guest stars in hilarious roles, including Amy Sedaris, Christian Slater, Roseanne Barr, Jenny McCarthy, John Leguizamo and John Waters. The second season's 22 episodes span four discs, along with extras including audio commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers and a making-of for the "Robbed a Stoner Blind" episode.Buy from Amazon.com

The Unit, a band of undercover U.S. Army Special Forces, tackles assignments to defend the country's safety — without revealing their true identities or occupations. This second season continues to delve into the personal lives of the Unit's crew, including their marriages (and affairs) and the tensions of leading secret lives. The excellent cast includes Dennis Haysbert as Jonas Blane, Robert Patrick as Colonel Tom Ryan and Scott Foley as Bob Brown. Twenty-two episodes are covered on six discs here, along with generous audio commentary and several making-of featurettes.Buy from Amazon.com
ESPN's celebrated original drama about the 1977 Yankees, based on Jonathan Mahler's novel, was one of the summer's surprise hits. The Bronx Is Burning doesn't just cover the big personalities and impressive play happening on the diamond: The ever-present backdrop is New York's tumultuous summer of '77, as the Son of Sam was on a killing spree and a mayoral race created political tension. Especially noteworthy are John Turturro as Billy Martin, Oliver Platt as George Steinbrenner and Daniel Sunjata as Reggie Jackson. The eight-part miniseries covers three discs that are packed with extras, including deleted and extended scenes, commentaries, stats on the '77 Bronx Bombers and interviews with the real Steinbrenner and Jackson, as well as Billy Martin Jr. (Martin's son) and Turturro. This raunchy animated parody of reality TV and superhero archetypes is definitely not for kids: There's loads of off-color language, nudity and general nastiness. But there's also plenty of hilarity, if your sense of humor tends toward the opposite of PC. These two DVDs feature uncensored versions of the already outrageous 15 episodes that aired on Comedy Central. The extras consist of audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes interviews and karaoke sing-along songs from the show.Buy from Amazon.com
Enter the world of FBI Special Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), his genius mathematician brother, Charlie (the nerdy-sexy David Krumholtz) and their father, Alan (Judd Hirsch) in this crime-drama-meets-advanced-calculus series. Charlie helps Don solve crimes and prevent disasters with his impressive grasp of patterns, and Don returns the favor by helping Charlie with relationship advice. This season saw a leave of absence for Dr. Larry Fleinhardt (Ally McBeal's Peter MacNicol), who spent some time aboard the space station (while the actor joined 24) but returned in one of the later episodes. This six-disc set covers 24 episodes as well as commentary by the cast and crew, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and bloopers. Buy from Amazon.com
