"Was my life not a cautionary tale for you?"

Those fateful words are uttered by Whitney Houston in what will be the pop singer's last film, Sparkle.

In the first trailer for the musical, released Monday, Houston plays mom to Jordin Sparks' Sparkle, an aspiring singer-songwriter who joins a Supremes-like girl group in the '60s.

Sparkle wrapped production last November, three months before Houston's death by accidental drowning on Feb. 11. She was 48 years old. The film, which will feature new music by Houston, hits theaters in August.
