"Mentor may be too strong a word, but he's definitely going to be in Jax's orbit and influence Jax this season," creator Kurt Sutter told TVGuide.com. "They find some common ground, and they definitely will [work together] on one project... [Nero] will also be in Gemma's orbit."
De Jesus, who is in a relationship with Smits in real life, joins the previously cast Harold Perrineau, who will play Damon Pope, the ruthless Oakland gangster whose daughter was run down by Tig (Kim Coates) at the end of Season 4.
Sons of Anarchy was renewed for a fifth season back in October. FX then ordered a sixth season in February.
