Ugly Betty's Williams Advocates Teen Driving Safety
Vanessa Williams and her son Devin
Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams is on a mission this holiday season pushing for parents and teens to sit down and discuss driving safety.
The mother of four vividly recalled her school days during the '70s when a drunken driving death left everyone shocked. "One of the kids from school was killed in a drinking and driving accident. She was a passenger and I knew the driver," said Williams. "It was devastating and really sad, and it's one of those things he'll have to live with for the rest of his life."
Now that Williams' son, Devin, is 15-years-old, both have become spokespeople for Allstate's National Home for the Holiday's Safe Driving Campaign. The two recently signed the Parent-Teen Driving contact which outlines expectations for smart driving decisions that involve everything from drinking to texting to having friends as passengers.
"The fact is our teens are more likely to die in a car crash than from anything else, so having a safe driving talk with your teen is just as an important as talking about drugs and sex," said Williams. "And [I hope] other parents give the same holiday gift as I am giving my son."
The 45-year-old actress was thrilled with the fact that contract is also a great opportunity to actually sit down and have a discussion with your kids. "The fact that [my 15-year-old and I] can have a conversation is a good thing!"
