Everybody loves Ty Burrell! At 43, he's hitting his stride playing the funniest dad on prime time: man-child Phil Dunphy on the Emmy-winning Modern Family (Wednesdays, 9/8c, ABC).
TV Guide Magazine: This year, you and your wife became first-time parents — have you used any of Phil's "peerenting" tips?
Burrell: Not yet. She's only 8 months old. Phil is a cautionary tale in some ways, but I'm trying to incorporate the positive aspects of Phil.
TV Guide Magazine: Can you relate to Phil and his "cool dad" ways?
Burrell: I used to think I was like Phil, but I'm actually finding that Phil is a lot more simpleminded — and I mean that in a good way. I'm too neurotic, and it's a very peaceful place in Phil's brain.
TV Guide Magazine: Tonight's episode finds Phil uncharacteristically rattled...
Burrell: He's basically trying to find a smoke detector that's chirping because of a low battery. It becomes his Moby Dick.
TV Guide Magazine: Today, you also show up on Sesame Street — what was that like?
Burrell: Amazing! A few things have happened because of Modern Family that have blown my mind. That was one of them.
