Born in England, Scott began his career directing television commercials with his brother, Ridley Scott. His first major feature film was The Hunger in 1983, starring David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve. He then directed Tom Cruise in Top Gun, which became one of the highest grossing films in 1986.

Throughout the '90s and 2000s, Scott directed many A-list action films including The Last Boy Scout, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and, most recently, Unstoppable. Scott's final project was Out of the Furnace, a drama he was producing starring Christian Bale. The film is scheduled for release next year.

Scott and his brother also delved back into television, co-producing CBS' Numb3rs and executive-producing the CBS legal drama The Good Wife.

Scott is survived by his wife, Donna, and their twin sons, Frank and Max.
