Modern Family

Modern Family
9/8c ABC
Remember the first day of school? It was an opportunity to make new friends, start fresh and look forward to another year of learning. But since it's the Pritchetts we're talking about, you can throw all that schmaltzy stuff out the window. Instead, Phil and Claire get off on the wrong foot once the kids are out of the house, and Jay and Gloria disagree on Manny's choice of attire. And speaking of firsts, Mitchell and Cameron are beside themselves when Lily gets her first bump on the head. — Joe Friedrich

World Series
7:30/6:30c FOX
Those able to put football on the back burner for a week should be in for a treat. This matchup of the defending champion Phillies and $200 million Yankees features the NL's top offense against the AL's in two of the game's top parks for hitters; two of baseball's top sluggers in Ryan Howard and Alex Rodriguez; and in the opener, the game's last two Cy Young Award winners — Cliff Lee for Philadelphia and CC Sabathia for the Yankees. — Dave Roeder

Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space
8/7c NBC
Following the success of the film Monsters vs. Aliens, DreamWorks has produced a Halloween special featuring the voices of original cast members Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Kiefer Sutherland, Will Arnett and Rainn Wilson. In the special, Susan and the Monsters, who now work for the U.S. government, are sent to Susan's hometown to stop an alien invasion in the days before Halloween. Clever as always, the aliens have adopted the guise of harmless jack-o-lanterns as they lie in wait for the perfect time to strike. — Brie Hearn

Dinner: Impossible
10/9c Food Network
Chef Robert Irvine tries to whip up a rockin' meal that will hopefully have 250 Rock Hall VIPs singing his praises when he caters a party at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He'll only have nine hours to plan his menu and prepare it. And there's a catch, of course. Each dish must be based on influential music genres or events, such as Seattle grunge, the blues, Woodstock and rap. — Karen Andzejewicz

Ghost Hunters

9/8c Syfy
TAPS taps the Rockies, but not for a light-beer commercial. The team visits Colorado's Manitou Springs, home of the picturesque Briarhurst Manor, where visitors and employees speak of a ghostly child, a spectral skeletal woman, shadowy figures and disembodied voices that checked in, checked out and left a little of themselves behind. — Michael Chant
