When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced that they were divorcing on Friday, everyone was shocked. In retrospect, though, maybe we should have seen it coming. Here are five tell-tale signs that the once-happy couple was in trouble:
1. They made no public appearances together since February.
The last time TomKat attended an event together was at the Vanity Fair Oscar party on Feb. 26. While a lot of couples aren't snapped together all the time, Cruise and Holmes had always been staples on the red carpet.

2. They've been worlds apart.
While Cruise has been filming Oblivion in New Orleans and Iceland, Holmes stayed in New York City. When Cruise was in Los Angeles for the Rock of Ages premiere and in New York City for a Friars Club ceremony earlier this month, Holmes was in China for a charity appearance. (The Dawson's Creek star did briefly visit Cruise on set in Iceland two weeks ago, where the couple was spotted walking hand-in-hand.)
3. They've been leading different lifestyles.
Cruise has been working constantly since last fall, first filming Jack Reacher and then embarking on a huge media blitz for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He's been filming Oblivion since March. Holmes, meanwhile, has been taking care of their daughter Suri in New York City. The actress has reportedly requested for sole custody in her divorce papers, which she filed in New York Thursday.

4. She's been living in New York City.
For the past few months, Holmes has been living in the Big Apple, perhaps to establish residency. According to TMZ, Holmes is more likely to get sole custody of Suri in New York than in California, their primary residence, which favors joint custody.
5. Her fashion — she's dressing like her old self.
Holmes was a free spirit when it came to her style back in the day, but after hooking up with Cruise, the actress underwent a dramatic transformation. The severe bob, her own high-end fashion line, the A-list dresses and chic blouses — that wasn't the Holmes we met in the '90s. In recent weeks, though, Holmes has been sporting more of the casual style she was known for in her pre-Cruise days.
