While there was some concern about the continuing cleanup from the Fukushima nuclear accident, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised that the situation had been contained. The bid leader for Tokyo and IOC member Tsunekazu Takeda assured voters in the final presentation that Tokyo was the safest choice for the 2020 Games. "Tokyo can be trusted to be the safe pair of hands and much more," Takeda said. "Our case today is simple. Vote for Tokyo and you vote for guaranteed delivery. ... Tokyo is the right partner at the right time."
Tokyo previously hosted the 1964 Olympics.
The next Winter Olympic Games will be held in Sochi, Russia, in 2014 and in Pyeonchang, South Korea in 2018. In between, Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Summer Games.
