New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has backed out of a scheduled appearance at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas amid growing controversy over the church's beliefs.

Tebow began facing backlash last week when it was revealed that the church's pastor, Robert Jeffress, had made public statements denouncing Muslims, Jews, Mormons and members of the LGBT community. He also compared President Barack Obama to the antichrist.

The NFL star announced that he would be canceling the appearance in a series of posts on his Twitter page, writing: "While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance. I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day. Thank you for all of your love and support. God Bless!"
