Tiger Woods Takes Full Blame for "Embarrassing" Accident, Cancels Third Meeting with Police

Tiger Woods said in a statement on his website Sunday that his single-car accident was his fault, and he canceled a meeting with Florida state troopers for the third time, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
"This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect," Woods wrote. "I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again."

The statement was posted shortly before Florida Highway Patrol troopers were scheduled to interview Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren, at their home. FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said the golfer's attorney, Mark Nejame, canceled the meeting for the third consecutive day after 1 p.m. Sunday. A meeting has not been rescheduled, she said.
The FHP also released the 911 call made by an unidentified neighbor who reported the accident. The man told the dispatcher that his neighbor, whom he does not name as Woods, hit a tree.
"I have someone down in front of my house," the man said. "I see him, and he's laying down."

Woods is only legally required to present his license, registration and insurance to authorities, but he was expected to speak to the troopers to shed more light on his early Friday morning accident that left him bruised and bloodied. He said in his statement that the accident was a private matter, and "I want to keep it that way."
"Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible," he wrote. "The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false."

Nordegren told police she smashed the rear window of Woods' Cadillac Escalade with a golf club to rescue her husband after she heard the crash, which occured at 2:25 a.m. Friday after the 33-year-old struck a fire hydrant and then a tree.
"This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me," Woods continued. "I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be."
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, Montes said.
