Stand Up To Cancer
Stand Up to Cancer is returning to TV two years after its last star-studded fundraiser.
The event will be simulcast commercial-free on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC on Friday, Sept. 7 at 8/7c. Cable networks including HBO, HBO Latino, Bio, Lifetime Movie Network, Logo, MLB Network, mun2, Palladia and VH1 will also carry the fundraiser. (More cable channels are expected to join in the coming weeks.)
The previous two live-telecasts — which aired in 2008 and 2010 — were executive-produced by Laura Ziskin, a film producer and member of the SU2C Executive Leadership Council who succumbed to her own fight with breast cancer in June 2011. Taking her place this time around is Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, who will produce the special with Emmy winning producer Joel Gallen.
Stand Up to Cancer's Laura Ziskin: "Let's get cancer out of the closet"
"This broadcast has become a global call-to-action for all those touched by cancer," Paltrow said in a statement. "Like so many people, I know what it's like to lose a family member to this disease, and I'm honored to stand up in my father's memory."
Like the 2008 and 2010 broadcasts, this year's telecast will feature live performances and appearances by TV, movie, music and sports stars. To date, more than $180 million has been pledged toward SU2C's cancer research.
"Music and its ability to heal, unite and motivate will play a central role in this year's show, as will the stories of people affected by cancer and how SU2C is changing their lives," Gallen added. "It's an honor to build on the terrific legacy Laura Ziskin established with the previous two broadcasts."
