Sons of Anarchy's Maggie Siff: "Tara Will Always Be Struggling with Her Conscience"

It's been a tough season so far for Sons of Anarchy's Tara.

First, Tara (Maggie Siff) was rejected by her boyfriend, Jax (Charlie Hunnam), whose obsession with finding his abducted infant son made him push everyone away. Then, Tara unknowingly went to help Gemma (Katey Sagal) deal with a woman who threatened to turn in Gemma for the reward. After a scuffle, that woman ended up dead, and Tara helped Gemma cover it up.
"The moment Tara made the decision to go up and help, it kind of sealed the deal for trouble," Siff tells TVGuide.com "Just being around Gemma, you never know what direction things are going to go. All of the characters at one point or another learn that there's no arguing with her will."
Tara has been around the motorcycle club long enough to get her hands dirty, but she's never been this closely linked to murder. So, will Tara's involvement change her?

"I think Tara will always be struggling with her conscience in one way or another," Siff says. "The weight of those deeds and the ramifications that they have in the world continue to play themselves out in Tara's head and heart. But at the same time, there's a lot more gray in her world than there used to be. It's a function of having been in this world and following the logic of Gemma."
But don't look for Tara to become just like Gemma either. "I don't want to call Gemma amoral, but there is a way in which her moral universe is pretty radically different than most people," Siff says. "I suspect Tara's moral universe will always stay a little closer to that of the audience rather than some of the other characters on the show.
And even though Jax and Tara overcame a spat early this season, Tara's involvement in this murder will only further complicate the couple's relationship, Siff says.

"He's just so confused, I don't think he knows what he wants," she says. "Part of him wants her to be this other person that she started out as. I think seeing her move closer to this world is probably a source of conflict for him.
"It's going to be a pretty bumpy ride for them," Siff continues. "It's almost too much for them to handle, and it's not looking that good."
