Jimmy Smits Rides to Sons of Anarchy for Major Season 5 Role

Sons of Anarchy has collared NYPD Blue vet Jimmy Smits for a season-long arc, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

As first reported by Deadline, Smits will play Neron "Nero" Padilla, a Latino gangbanger with an exit strategy who becomes a dangerous mentor for Jax (Charlie Hunnam).

Smits, an Emmy-winner for his performance on L.A. Law, is best known for spending four years on NYPD Blue as Det. Bobby Simone. Since then, Smits has enjoyed stints on dramas including The West Wing, Dexter, for which he was nominated for a second Emmy, and most recently the short-lived Outlaw.

Sons of Anarchy was renewed for a fifth season back in October. FX then ordered a sixth season in February.
