Shatner Lashes Out at Takei over Wedding Snub

William Shatner

Star Trek's Captain Kirk and Sulu have had their differences, but the real-life pair is now facing the kind of earthly problems that miscommunication between old friends can create.

William Shatner lashed out at George Takei in a video Wednesday, apparently out of the belief that his former costar didn't invite him to his wedding this fall.

"The whole thing makes me feel badly," Shatner said in the video. "Poor man. There is such a sickness there. It's so patently obvious that there is a psychosis there. I don't know what his original thing about me was. I have no idea."

Later in the video, the Boston Legal star also says he never really knew Takei, and criticized the actor's decision to reveal his sexuality as an older man.

Takei, meanwhile, insists that he did in fact invite Shatner to his big day, but never got a reply. "It is unfortunate that Bill was unable to join us for our wedding as he indeed was invited to attend," he said in a statement. "It is our hope that at this point he joins us in voting NO on Proposition 8, which seeks to eliminate the fundamental right for same-sex couples to marry in California."

Takei announced his plan to marry his longtime partner, Brad Altman, after same-sex marriage became legal in California this past year. The two wed in a ceremony Sept. 15, where fellow former Star Trek stars Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) and Walter Koenig (Chekhov) were in attendance.

So who owes whom an apology? At this point, that's probably territory that will remain unexplored by the intrepid actors.
