Is There a Sharknado Sequel in the Works?
After taking Los Angeles and Twitter by storm on Thursday night, Syfy's TV movie Sharknado may be getting a sequel.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy's executive vice president of programming and original movies, Thomas Vitale, sounded optimistic about a possible Sharknado Part Deux, but stressed that talks are still in the early stages. "We've had a lot of meetings, emails. I'm not being coy, [but] that's obviously being talked about," he said. "There may be some kind of announcement coming forth, but there's nothing going to be announced now just because we haven't had real discussions with the real people we have to talk to about that."

Starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, Sharknado premiered to 1.4 million viewers on Thursday evening. However, the campy B-movie proved especially successful in the social media stratosphere, where the title was trending worldwide on Twitter and tweets about the movie reached a peak of more than 5,000 a minute. Celebrities such as Mia Farrow and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof tweeted about the movie as it was airing live. "There were a ton of other Hollywood writers and stars and comedians and it just felt like everyone wanted to be a part of the shared experience, which is also the beautiful thing about social media," Vitale said. "This shared experience becomes so democratic. This thing wasn't just a No. 1 trending twitter topic in the States, it was in the top 10 as far away as Australia."
