Could Ryan Seacrest Replace Matt Lauer on Today?

Ryan Seacrest and Matt Lauer

If Matt Lauer leaves his co-anchor seat on NBC's Today show in 2012, he could be replaced by... Ryan Seacrest.

The Today producers met with the American Idol host on Tuesday for preliminary talks about possibly succeeding Lauer, the Wall Street Journal reports. Lauer has been with Today since 1997 and has been thinking of leaving the show.

Seacrest already works with NBCUniversal, hosting and producing a daily news show on the company's E! network and producing the Kardashians' reality franchise. The negotiations with NBCUniversal are ongoing and nothing has been decided yet.
