Report: Randy Jackson to Become a Mentor on American Idol

Randy Jackson

The judges' table on American Idol may feature all new faces when the show returns in January.

Randy Jackson, the last remaining original judge, is reportedly stepping down and will instead serve as a mentor to the contestants, according to TMZ.

TMZ quotes a source who claims Idol brass is concerned that Jackson is not well-suited for the mentor role, but they feel the need to retain him because "he's the glue that helps keep the show together."

A representative for Fox said the network had no comment on the reports.

Report: Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban nearing American Idol deals

With Mariah Carey confirmed as one of the judges, sources tell TMZ that a deal to bring Nicki Minaj on board is "99% done."

There's no word on who will replace Jackson, and TMZ reports that the show will feature four judges again in the upcoming season, with one preferably from the country music world.

Among the many celebrities who have reportedly been in contention are Alanis Morissette, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
