Katherine Heigl is leaving Grey's Anatomy, Entertainment Weekly reports.
ABC and Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes have agreed to let the 31-year-old actress out of her contract, according to EW.
It's unclear how her character, Izzie Stevens, will be written out, but Heigl, who won the show's sole acting Emmy in 2007, is not expected to return at all for the final five episodes of the season, EW said, making her January appearance her final (regular) hurrah as Izzie.
Katherine Heigl taking another leave of absence from Grey's Anatomy
Heigl has been MIA for most of the medical drama's sixth season, taking a leave of absence to shoot a film and to spend time with her daughter, Naleigh, whom she adopted in the fall. Her most recent episode aired in January. She was scheduled to return to the set earlier this month, but didn't show after her messages inquiring about her call times went unreturned, E! reports.
ABC had no comment, while Heigl is currently without a publicist. An announcement may be made later this week, a source told E!
Katherine Heigl and husband adopting a girl
Heigl's reported exit follows years of drama between her and the ABC hit. She slammed Isaiah Washington in 2007 for using a slur about their co-star and her good friend T.R. Knight. A year later, she removed her name from Emmy eligibility because she "did not feel I was given the material ... to warrant a nomination." Last summer, she told David Letterman that she found the show's 17-hour day on the first day back on Season 6 to be "cruel and mean."
How do you think Heigl's exit should be handled? Will you miss Izzie on Grey's?
