Another nail landed in the Smash coffin Monday: Star Debra Messing has been cast in the lead role of an untitled CBS comedy pilot from former Sex and the City writers, TVGuide.com has learned.
Messing will play Shira, a married mom who struggles to balance family, life and work. She'll also act as an executive producer for the project.
Pilot Season: Get all the scoop from the major networks
The pilot, based on an Israeli series, comes from executive producers/writers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, both of whom also worked on Smash.
NBC recently announced that Smash would be moving to Saturday nights but that all remaining episodes of this season would be aired. That, combined with Messing's new gig, doesn't bode well for the show's future.
