Swayze's love of dance began as a child, when her mother enrolled her in dance classes to help her regain strength after she was involved in a car accident, according to the Times. She went on to run her own dance studio and found the Houston Jazz Ballet Company. She taught dance at the University of Houston and was also a choreographer for the Houston Playhouse Center and the Houston Youth Symphony and Ballet Company. Her students included Tommy Tune and Debbie Allen.
Swayze transitioned into a film career by choreographing John Travolta in Urban Cowboy and moved to Los Angeles in 1980. She also coached Patrick and his wife Lisa (who met Patrick when she was a student of Patsy's) on the 2005 film One Last Dance.
In addition to Patrick, who died in 2009, Patsy Swayze had four other children, all of whom became actors or dancers.
