Avatar: The Last Airbender

Nickelodeon has ordered a spinoff of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the cable channel announced Wednesday.

The new series, tentatively titled The Legend of Korra, will build on the mythology of the original series and will take place 70 years later. The action follows Korra, a hot-headed, independent teenage girl avatar who must defend Republic City from crime.

Airbender is one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated shows, according to the channel. The animated series served as the inspiration for The Last Airbender, the live-action film from M. Night Shyamalan released earlier this summer.

Korra comes from Airbender creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It's set to premiere in 2011.
