Despite weeks of speculation that Naya Rivera would not be returning to Glee for its sixth and final season, TVLine reports that the actress will be back on the show — albeit as a recurring guest star, not a series regular.
Summer TV Preview: Where we left off with returning shows
Rivera requested the demotion, according the site. The news comes after reports surfaced that Rivera and her co-star Lea Michele had been feuding on set and that Rivera may have been fired from the show as a result. Fox later issued a statement saying Rivera is still under contract. Last week, star Chris Colfer's Twitter was hacked to say that he was also leaving the show. (Colfer quickly clarified that he will be back in Season 6).
Rivera has played Santana Lopez on the Fox musical since its 2009 premiere. Previous series regulars who were demoted to guest stars include Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz.
Glee will return midseason.
