NBC Renews Smash for Second Season; Creator to Depart

Smash

Smash, NBC's soapy musical drama about the making of a Broadway show, has been renewed for a second season, the network announced Thursday.

The series, which debuted on Feb. 6, is NBC's No. 1 drama in viewership and in adults 18 to 49, with an average of 7.7 million viewers and a 2.6 rating.

The Lowdown on NBC's Smash: Weighing the hype vs. the reality

Produced by Steven Spielberg and created by Emmy nominee Theresa Rebeck (NYPD Blue), the drama pits theater newbie Karen Cartwright (American Idol alum Katharine McPhee) against Broadway vet Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) for the coveted starring role in a production about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Jack Davenport also star in the series.

Despite the show's renewal,  Rebeck will not serve as the series' showrunner next season, according to Deadline. She will continue to serve as executive producer and may occasionally write scripts, but she will step down from running the series on a day-to-day basis. NBC is currently looking for a new producer to replace her.

Smash airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
