Joel McHale, Community and Debra Messing, Smash
NBC will bench Community to make room for returning comedy 30 Rock on Thursdays, and has set a premiere date for new series The Firm and Are You There, Chelsea?
The network also announced Monday that its upcoming musical drama Smash will debut on Monday, Feb. 6 at 10/9c following the second episode of The Voice.
NBC orders The Firm to series
Part of a massive Thursday-night overhaul, The Firm, a TV adaptation of the 1993 Tom Cruise film, will premiere at a special day and time, Sunday, Jan. 8, before moving to Thursdays at 10/9c beginning Jan. 12. 30 Rock will return the same day at 8/7c, replacing Community, which will be benched until a later date (NBC tells The Futon Critic all 22 episodes will air). Up All Night will move into the post-Office timeslot, while Whitney will move to Wednesdays at 8/7c.
On Wednesdays, Whitney will be paired with the new comedy from Chelsea Handler, Are You There, Chelsea?, premiering Jan. 11 at 8:30/7:30c. Chelsea will be followed by Rock Center with Brian Williams, which will air at 9/8c and moves Harry's Law to Sundays at 8/7c.
NBC temporarily stops production on upcoming drama Awake
In addition to premiere dates, NBC announced the series finale date for Chuck (Friday, Jan. 27) and the season finale for Parenthood (Tuesday, Feb. 28). New reality series Fashion Star will take over Parenthood's timeslot on March 13.
In addition to Community, other shows missing from the list include Prime Suspect which has not been picked up for its back nine episodes, and midseason series Bent and Awake.
