The only thing creepier than James Spader in NBC's new drama The Blacklist might be his hologram-esque likeness. As part of the Peacock network's presence at Comic-Con, crowds will be able to interact with a "virtual Red Reddington," Spader's mysterious Blacklist character.
Virtual Spader will be located in a replica of a glass cell box the villain is briefly confined to on the show's pilot episode. The character will share lines from the show as fans get up close. (Fans will also be given a branded show bag).
To produce the hologram-like attraction (called a "hologlass"), NBC scripted original lines and hired a company to shoot Spader, whose footage was then married with the projection of a 3-D image. "We're trying to create this mystery of 'Who is this guy?'" says Sharon Allen, NBC Entertainment's senior vice president of marketing.
Allen notes that The Blacklist panel (Thursday at 3 p.m. in Room 6A) marks the first time Spader has promoted anything at Comic-Con. She hopes to bring him by the attraction to meet with his virtual self some time during the convention. "Our goal is to create a spectacle," she says.
To promote another new series, Dracula, NBC has built a version of Dracula's crypt and a walk-through experience — including a room revealing the famed vampire's sarcophagus.
The network has also re-created Grimm's The Exotic Tea & Spice Shop, where fans can take photos, and is building phone recharge station (and passing out fish tacos) at the Tin Fish restaurant to promote Revolution.
The NBC experiences are located at Gas Lamp Square, which the network calls "Crossroads to Comic-Con." Around Comic-Con, NBC is passing out collapsible box seats (promoting Grimm and Dracula) for fans waiting in long lines.
