ABC's Modern Family, Fox's Glee and HBO's In Treatment were among Wednesday's 36 Peabody Award winners, which included the usual strong array of public-affairs programming.
"Our selections demonstrate that great work available in 2009 varied widely and appealed to viewers and listeners with very different tastes, interests and concerns," said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, said in announcing the awards.

Other notable winners include HBO's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, CBS' The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (featuring a guest appearance by Archbishop Desmond Tutu) and two reports by Steve Kroft, "Sabotaging the System" and "The Cost of Dying," which aired on CBS' 60 Minutes
Thrilla in Manila, an HBO documentary about the last of three legendary heavyweight bouts between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier that pulled no punches about their rivalry, also was cited.

Diane Sawyer — who also won a Peabody for her documentary A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains — will host the awards ceremony May 17 in New York.
The George Foster Peabody Awards, under the auspices of the University of Georgia's journalism department, recognize achievement and public service by TV and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals and the World Wide Web.
