Following gay marriage becoming legal again in California, Modern Family may soon feature a wedding between Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).
Celebrities react to landmark same-sex marriage decisions
"It's certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn't have in prior seasons," co-creator Christopher Lloyd
told Entertainment Weekly
, following the Supreme Court's ruling
against the Defense of Marriage Act and dismissal of an appeal regarding Proposition 8, California's gay marriage ban. "We've had a number of conversations. As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell's life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn't it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it? We imagine a lot of gay couples today are deciding whether to get married now that it's open to them. From our standpoint, that's something to explore."
Lloyd said the writers have avoided Cam and Mitchell's wedding in the past because he "didn't want to make an overt political statement" and risk alienating viewers. "It's not that we are absolutely unwilling. It was more of a tonal thing. It didn't seem like our show to do that," Lloyd said.

This news should please the ACLU, who launched a campaign
compelling the series to feature a gay wedding. "The freedom to marry is being advanced in American living rooms as much as in court rooms," ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said last month. "As we wait for the Supreme Court to rule, we want to keep this issue on the minds and screens of Americans everywhere." However, Lloyd noted the writers didn't want to set a precedent,l of giving in to public pressure such as the ACLU's campaign.
But now that gay marriage is legal (at least in California), Lloyd's opinion has changed. "It's a funny thing, sitting around and celebrating for your characters on a day like this," he said. "We were happy for Mitch and Cam today!"
