Fox's The Mindy Project Adds Three New Cast Members
Stephen Tobolowsky, Mindy Kaling
Glee's Stephen Tobolowsky, whose credits also include Heroes and Californication, is joining Fox's The Mindy Project as the head of Mindy Kaling's medical practice, while Richard Schiff, who appears in the pilot, won't continue on the show.
Schiff was only a guest star on the Mindy pilot, and wasn't signed on as a series regular — but Toblowsky will be. He's one of several new cast members announced on Wednesday. Also joining the show's medical practice will be Ike Barinholtz (Mad TV) and Amanda Setton (Gossip Girl).
Barinholtz, Setton and Tobolowsky join a cast that includes Kaling, Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Anna Camp and Zoe Jarman. (Richard Schiff also guest starred in the series pilot as an unnamed doctor.)
Barinholtz will play the recurring character Morgan Tookers, the new male nurse at Mindy's medical practice. He's an ex-con without many formal qualifications — or good hygiene practices. According to his character description, he also lives in Queens with his best friend — "who happens to be his 80-year-old grandmother." Barinholtz will double as an executive story editor on The Mindy Project, wearing two hats on the show — similar to Kaling on The Office.
Series regular Setton joins the show as Shauna Dicanio, the Jersey-born office manager of Shulman and Associates. She's "a woman who collects unpaid patient bills like she's a bounty hunter," according to the character description.
Then there's Tobolowsky, who will play Dr. Marc Shulman, the head of Shulman and Associates. Reads the character description: "He's always excited to wax philosophical, especially if his advice gets the younger staff to leave him alone." Although the network stresses that Toblowsky isn't replacing Schiff (whose character isn't actually named in the pilot), its clear he'll be taking over as the show's older voice of authority.
The Mindy Project airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c this fall on Fox.
