Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera Wins First Triple Crown Since 1967

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera made history Wednesday, becoming the first baseball player since 1967 to win the triple crown, The New York Times reports.

Cabrera leads the American League in home runs (44), batting average (.330) and runs batted in (139) for the season.

Cabrera is only the fifteenth player to earn the honor. Though greats including Babe Ruth or Joe DiMaggio never accomplished it the feat, Ted Williams did so twice. Others in the elite club include Mickey Mantle and Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to win the triple crown before Cabrera.

Cabrera was in the clubhouse when the announcement was made in the sixth inning of the Tigers' eventual 1-0 win over Kansas CIty. "Right now, it's an unbelievable feeling," Cabrera said.
