Michael Shannon has signed to play a major villain in the upcoming Superman film, Deadline reports.
Shannon, 35, will step into the shoes of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.

"Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't," Snyder said in a statement. "Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."
Shannon joins a cast that includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, and Henry Cavill, who will play Superman.
Shannon was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor in 2009 for his performance in Revolutionary Road. He stars in HBO's Boardwalk Empire.
Man of Steel is set to hit theaters in late 2012.
