Actor Michael Jace, best known for playing Officer Julien Lowe on FX's The Shield, pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife on Wednesday, People reports.

Jace, 51, was arrested and charged with murder last month just days after his wife, April Jace, was shot and killed in their home on May 19.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered the defendant to stay away from his two young children, who were home at the time of the shooting and unharmed, and not to contact them if he is eventually released on $2 million bail.

Jace is due back in court on Aug. 1 for the possible start of a preliminary hearing. If convicted, Jace faces 50 years to life in state prison.

The actor is also known for his roles in Planet of the Apes, Boogie Nights, Forrest Gump and the gritty TNT cop drama Southland.
