Friday Night Lights
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
(Friday, 8/7c, NBC) Hard to believe there's a team worse than the struggling Lions of East Dillon, but Coach Taylor is hoping for a bit of redemption as his team takes on the Timberwolves in what's being dubbed "the Toilet Bowl." Meanwhile, Tami takes mopey Julie on a Boston college town, hoping to pull her out of her post-Matt funk.
THE 37th ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS
(Sunday, 9/8c, CBS) Regis Philbin hosts the celebration of daytime drama and infotainment from Las Vegas. Among the highlights: soap pioneer Agnes Nixon gets a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Dick Clark and his iconic American Bandstand get a starry salute from the eclectic likes of Cher, Garth Brooks, Marie Osmond, The Spinners, Simon Cowell and Barry Manilow.
ELLEN'S SOMEWHAT SPECIAL SPECIAL
(Sunday, 9/8c, TBS) Who better than Ellen DeGeneres to try to revive the variety-show format? Taped earlier this month at the Chicago Theatre, this extravaganza features comedy, music (Lady Antebellum), magic (Australian illusionist James Galea) and novelty acts including The Catwalk Acrobats, vertical-pole performer Dominic "The Flag Man" Lacasse and from Japan, Kabuki Expert. Sounds pretty special to us.
(Sunday, 10:30/9:30c, HBO) The Hollywood comedy kicks off its seventh season with movie star Vince in the driver's seat—literally, as the director of his new action film urges him to do his own stunts. Eric and Ari are not pleased. But Ari's got other items on his agenda, including the NFL, with whom he'd like to do big business.
