Matt Lauer's having a rough week. Not only is his future at Today under close speculation, but now his character is under attack.
On Tuesday, Darren Sweeney, a local Fox reporter in Ohio, quoted former Today intern Mark Zinni criticizing Lauer on Twitter. "I was just a young kid with a bright future ahead of me," Zinni said, adding that the host was "not so nice." Zinni also retweeted Sweeney's tweet.
Is NBC replacing Matt Lauer with Anderson Cooper?
The next day, Lauer, who rarely tweets, responded: "huh? Always tried to be nice Mark. Sorry you didn't think so. Hope you're doing well. Matt"
Zinni, who interned at Today in 1997 (the same year Lauer became co-host) and is now an anchor at Cleveland's Fox affiliate station, elaborated on his story on Fox 8's website. "If you know me, you probably know that I don't take myself too seriously," Zinni wrote. "So my answer was more of a joke about being young and naïve during my time at Today, but I added that he wasn't nice to me.
"I didn't slam the guy, I just made an honest comment."
Zinni said that he was "shocked" and "flattered" that Lauer bothered responding or remembered him at all.
"By the way, Katie [Couric] and Ann [Curry] were great," he added.
Do you believe Zinni?
