Martin Short on Kathie Lee's Big On-Air Blunder: "People Make Mistakes"

Hoda Kotb, Kathie Lee Gifford and Martin Short

Although viewers are still buzzing about Kathie Lee Gifford's major on-air blunder on Wednesday's Today, in which she asked Martin Short about his dead wife, the actor has no hard feelings.

"On live television, people make mistakes. There's no ill will intended," Short told E! News. "It's nice to aspire to be kind of elegant."

Kathie Lee puts her foot in her mouth by asking Martin Short about his dead wife

While promoting Madagascar 3 on Today, Gifford asked Short about his wife, who died in 2010 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. "And he and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?"

Short awkwardly answered "36 hours," but Gifford realized her error soon enough and apologized both on-air and on her Twitter account later Wednesday. "I send my sincerest apologies to Martin Short and his family," Gifford tweeted yesterday upon learning of her faux pas. "He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."
