Japan's Mao Asada has won the World Figure Skating Championship for the third time, The Associated Press reports.
Asada, who finished sixth at the Sochi Olympics, had only a 1.42-point lead after the short program, but managed to claim the gold thanks to her free skate on Saturday.

"I was able to control myself and I have done what I had to do," Asada said. "I was much more nervous than I was for the short program, but the cheering from the fans was with me and made me relax."
Asada, 23, also won the world championships in 2008 and 2010 and is now the first Japanese three-time champion.
Russia's Julia Lipnitskaia, 15, was 9.19 points behind Asada and Italy's Carolina Koster, who won worlds in 2012, finished third. Gracie Gold of the United States finished fifth.
