Pilot Season: Maggie Lawson Joins ABC Comedy — What Does This Mean for Psych?

Maggie Lawson

Should Psych-Os be worried? Maggie Lawson, who stars on the USA comedy, has joined ABC's untitled comedy pilot from Las Vegas writers Mark and Robb Cullen, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

Psych renewed for an eighth season

Lawson will headline the single-camera comedy opposite James Caan. She will play Terry, a recently divorced single mom who temporarily moves in with her estranged father (Caan), a beer-drinking former baseball player. She reluctantly starts coaching her son's Little League team and finds herself drawn back into the sports world she once vowed to leave behind.

Lawson, 32, has co-starred on Psych since its inception. Although Season 7 doesn't premiere until Feb. 27, USA already renewed Psych for a shortened eight-episode eighth season last year. Filming on Season 8 is set to start in April, according to Deadline, which means Lawson would have time to film Season 8 before production would begin on the ABC comedy if it is picked up to series. However, Lawson's casting on the ABC pilot is in first position, which means if the project is picked up and Psych is renewed for a Season 9, it's unclear what would happen to Lawson's character, Juliet. Deadline reports that the plan is currently for Psych to wrap after Season 8.
