Madonna Contributes to Italian Earthquake Relief Effort

Madonna

Madonna has made a "substantial donation" to aid earthquake victims in Italy, her rep said.

The singer's paternal grandparents lived in the village of Pacento in the Abruzzo region of Italy, where a 6.3 temblor Monday morning left more than 200 people dead. Following the disaster, the mayor of Pacento made a direct appeal to Madonna for help.

"I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from," Madonna told People. "My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones or their homes."

The Material Girl's rep would not specify the amount, but a source told the magazine she contributed $500,000.
