Mad Men Surprise: Hey, Look! It's Rory Gilmore!

Mad Men

Apparently, little Rory Gilmore grew up to be a 1960s housewife in Cos Cob.

On Sunday's Mad Men, Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel popped up as Beth Dawes, the wife of insurance salesman Howard Dawes, with whom Pete Cambell (Vincent Kartheiser) regularly commutes to work.  When Pete finds Beth stranded at the train station — and with Pete knowing that Howard is shacking up for the night with his "side dish" in the city — he offers to take Beth to her home. And because it's Mad Men, they instantly sleep together.

Mad Men as horror movie: A few (not so) good men

We've already seen Pete resort to adultery as a means of dealing with his hatred of living in the country, but this time around it seems he too wanted to feel what it's like to have a "side dish." Instead, he develops feelings for Beth, and begs her to meet him for another go-round at Hotel Pennsylvania. Despite being in a broken marriage, Beth isn't willing to let her fling with Pete become anything more. Rather, their time together is as fleeting as the heart she draws for Pete in the condensation on her window.

Of course, Bledel, who also appeared on ER since her Gilmore Girls days ended, could return. (She did attend this season's premiere, after all.) Because if we've learned anything about the nakedly ambitious Pete Campbell, it's that he doesn't easily give up on something he wants.

Side note: The episode also features another cameo. Dennis Haskins (aka Saved by the Bell's Mr. Belding) plays one of the scientists at Cool Whip's test kitchen.

Were you surprised to see Bledel in a more grown-up role? Do you hope she returns?
