MTV Moves VMAs to Avoid Competition with Obama's DNC Speech

Barrack Obama, Harry Styles

Thursday almost set the stage for the battle of the century: One Direction versus President Barack Obama.

MTV's 2012 Video Music Awards and the final night of the Democratic National Convention will both air Thursday, Sept. 6, but thanks to some quick rescheduling, MTV has avoided any conflict with the sitting president's speech.

What did you think of Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the VMAs will now air from 8-10 pm/ET, hopefully clearing any competition with Obama's speech, expected to air after 10 pm/ET.

Last year's VMAs received a record-breaking 12.4 million viewers, solidifying it as the most-watched telecast on cable that week. With performances by tween sensations One Direction, plus Rihanna and Taylor Swift, this year's awards are primed to be a rating's juggernaut as well.
