Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are set to produce the TV movie, based on the original 1989 film, which starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts, among others. Zadan and Meron are said to be looking for equally high-caliber black actresses to fill the roles in their contemporary take set in Louisiana.

Kenny Leon, whose previous credits include ABC's A Raisin In the Sun, will direct.

Who do you think should be cast in the all-black Steel Magnolias? We think The Help's Octavia Spencer would be perfect in Parton's role, or Audra McDonald could fill Olympia Dukakis' shoes as Clairee.
