Lauryn Hill Hit with Federal Tax Charges in N.J.

Singer Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file income tax returns for several years with the IRS, The Associated Press reports.

The eight-time Grammy winner earned more than $1.6 million during from 2005-2007, but failed to file returns for those three years, according to federal prosecutors. In addition to recording and film royalties, Hill owns and operates four corporations, according to court documents.

Hill, 37, first entered the spotlight in the '90s as one-third of the hip-hop group The Fugees, best known for their remake of "Killing Me Softly." She went onto sell eight million records and garner the biggest critical acclaim of her career for her 1998 solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In recent years, she has largely dropped out of the public to raise her six children. She currently lives in South Orange, N.J.

Hill could face up to a year in prison and $100,000 on each charge. She is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate on June 29.
